As initial action has been started with the creation of a bird observatory. When deciding the location was taken account a number of criteria as a guide, accessibility, vegetation type and topography.
GUIDANCE
To watch the birds clearly, light is an important factor. A good light on the bird enhance contrast and highlight the colors and shapes. We chose the area where it is already installed as its direction is almost always allowed to have the sun on your back with what the bird is always seen well lit, if the weather permitting.
ACCESSIBILITY
would consider to be an area accessible to all and that our interest is to show the fauna of Mount Serantes the general public. Therefore we seek a place, but away from the track uphill, was a busy place, with the observatory acquired a complement of entertainment way to climb to the summit.
VEGETATION
Another important aspect that we have in mind is the surrounding vegetation (shrubs and trees) as it is, in principle, which provide natural shelter for birds that intend approach.
To build the observatory will be settled and concreted the basis on which later settled the structure.
FENCE
Once people finished PROTEC installation of the structure, made an elegant fence. Its purpose is to protect the plants that cattle will has been completed.
After the closing put a series decorative components to attract birds and thus facilitate observation. As a main component, build a pond as a watering hole and swimming area but no doubt, help to increase the potential of the amphibian fauna in our plantation.
POND
The construction of the pond was a harder job than we think because as we begin to deepen wanted to be rock star to the end.
have also been strategically placed other items of interest to attract birds. Also we take the number of rocks we got from the pan to make piles of rocks, ideal to provide shelter for reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and small mammals.
Placing feeders
Finally, our idea is to isolate the traffic inside the observatory walkers and bird offer an environment that provides security, so we closed the perimeter of the observatory with a hedge. It consists of 70% of spiny ( Blackthorn - Prunus spinosa- and Hawthorn - Crataegus monogyna- ) and 30% of heavy transport ( Lantana - lantana- Vivurnum .)
I just never thank enough Bilbao ACCEM volunteers because without them we'd still be starting with the fence. Thanks guys!
